Wyndham to Broome

Day 1: Depart Wyndham

Welcome to the adventure of a lifetime! You’ll be picked up from your accommodation in Kununurra and transferred by coach to Wyndham, which is about a one-hour ride. We recommend arriving in Kununurra the day before your departure, as transfers will begin early the next morning.

Once aboard the Eco Abrolhos, you’ll meet the crew and receive a safety induction before we set sail from Wyndham. We’ll take advantage of the tidal movements into Cambridge Gulf to explore its extensive mudflats and lush mangrove colonies.

We might stop for an afternoon exploration, where you can enjoy your first Kimberley sunset from our viewing deck. If the tides allow, we’ll then continue on to the Berkeley River. After an overnight voyage, you’ll wake up to the breathtaking geological landscape that is unique to the Kimberley region.

Day 2: Cambridge Gulf to Berkeley River

Awaken to the stunning scenery of the Berkeley River. We’ll embark on a tender ride to explore the mangroves and the diverse life that thrives within them. Our first waterfall stop will be Casuarina Falls, a natural amphitheater shaped over time.

After enjoying lunch, we’ll navigate across the mouth of the Berkeley River to our anchorage, which you can admire from the magnificent view on the top deck.

Next, it’s time for a scenic tender ride where you’ll take in the beauty of Malcom Douglas Falls while keeping an eye out for the elusive short-eared rock wallaby and the majestic birds of prey that frequent the area. As the day winds down, reflect on the picturesque landscape and the day’s adventures coming to a close.

Day 3: Berkeley River to Koolama Bay

The Eco Abrolhos will set off at high tide, crossing the river mouth bar and heading into the Bonaparte Gulf on our way to the majestic King George River. As we travel, you’ll hear a fascinating WW2 story about the state ship MV Koolama, setting the stage for your immersion in the region’s geological wonders.

Prepare to be amazed as our tenders take you upstream through the breathtaking King George River, home to the highest waterfalls in Western Australia. This is an experience you won’t want to miss; not only are the falls a spectacular sight, but you’ll also have the chance to enjoy a refreshing shower from one of the cascades right from our comfortable tenders.

After this incredible adventure, we’ll return to the Eco Abrolhos for drinks as we watch the sunset.

Day 4: Napier Broome Bay to Vansittart Bay

The Eco Abrolhos crew will weigh anchor as we make our way through Napier Broome Bay and into the remarkable Drysdale River, one of the longest river systems in the Kimberley. Our tenders will venture to the river’s far reaches, where you can explore the unique landscape where freshwater meets saltwater.

Next, we’ll land at Rocky Cove for a beach excursion. Here, you’ll hike along a winding rocky path to discover scattered rock art sites that vividly illustrate the connection to Indigenous Australia. There will also be an opportunity for fishing during our time here.

After our exploration of the Drysdale River, sit back and enjoy a leisurely afternoon cruise as we make our way to Vansittart Bay.

Day 5: Vansittart Bay

We’ll rise early to embark on the tenders, heading to a lesser-known World War II historical site. A short and easy stroll will lead us to the remnants of this significant moment in history. Our eco-guides will be on hand to highlight the local vegetation, including patches of native grassland and vibrant wildflowers along the way.

After a delicious breakfast, we’ll set off to explore the intriguing Jar Island, where you’ll discover an ancient art gallery that feels lost in time. This site offers a fascinating glimpse into the early occupation of Indigenous Australia, showcasing another form of rock art known locally as Gwion Gwion (or Bradshaw).

Upon returning to the Eco Abrolhos for lunch, we’ll set our course for the southernmost point of Vansittart Bay, ready for more exploration ahead.

Day 6: Vansittart Bay to Osborne Island

We’ll set off early to visit a Wandjina Rock Art Site, an area of great significance to the Wunambal Gaambera people of the North Kimberley. From there, we’ll cruise to Port Warrender and the beautiful Osborne Islands, renowned for their fertile pearling grounds.

Upon arrival at the Osborne Islands, we’ll embark on a tender tour to explore the area, including a visit to a pearl farm (subject to availability), a historic shipwreck, and an ancient rock art site. After our explorations, we’ll hop back on board and continue our journey further west.

Day 7: Naturalist Island, Hunter River to Port Nelson

Savor your breakfast amidst a breathtaking landscape that truly captivates the senses. In the morning, optional helicopter tours will depart from Naturalist Island, offering stunning views of the spectacular Mitchell Falls and the surrounding area. If you prefer to stay grounded, there’s an option for a scenic tender excursion along the Hunter River, where you can encounter some of the unique wildlife of the Kimberley.

After lunch aboard the Eco Abrolhos, we’ll continue our journey southwest to Port Nelson, where we’ll visit a historic boab tree in the Prince Regent River National Park. We’ll then arrive at a secluded anchorage near Prudhoe Island for the night, allowing you to immerse yourself in the remote wilderness of the Kimberley.

Day 8: Port Nelson to Prince Regent River

An early morning wake-up will reward you with stunning scenery as we cruise into St George Basin and the Prince Regent River. After lunch, we’ll set off in the tenders to explore the river further. Here, you’ll find two of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Kimberley, with the option to enjoy a refreshing swim above the Kings Cascades.

This hidden gem is truly an oasis. So don your Hawaiian gear and join us on the top deck for a barbecue, where you can take in the breathtaking 360-degree views of this magnificent river system.

Day 9: Prince Regent River to Hanover Bay

Start your day with an early morning fishing session, giving keen anglers a chance to catch their lunch or dinner. If fishing isn’t your thing, you can hop on the tenders to explore the magnificent side tributaries of the Prince Regent River, where you’ll encounter diverse birdlife and reptilian activity along the mangrove-lined waterways.

Enjoy your lunch as we cruise out of the Prince Regent River through St George Basin, taking in the impressive tidal currents that have shaped this unique waterway. We’ll then anchor in Hanover Bay for the night, and if time allows, we’ll venture ashore to walk in the footsteps of early European explorers.

Day 10: Hanover Bay, Camden Harbour Harbour to Doubtful Bay

We’re now heading south to the historic Camden Harbour Settlement, a site steeped in incredible stories of resilience. As we explore the history and ruins, we’ll make a short beach landing at Sheep Island, immersing ourselves in the tales of this once-thriving township.

Continuing our journey south, we’ll pass Kuri Bay and enter the whale breeding grounds of Camden Sound, renowned for its vibrant marine life. From there, we’ll proceed onward to the picturesque Doubtful Bay, ready for more discoveries ahead.

Day 11: Doubtful Bay to Montgomery Reef

Start your day with a breathtaking sunrise in Red Cone Creek, followed by a quick splash as we explore the mangrove ecosystem by tender, making our way to either Sapphire Creek or Ruby Falls.

As we cruise out of Doubtful Bay, you’ll learn about the deep connection of the First Australians to the stunning Raft Point.

In the afternoon, we’ll visit one of the Kimberley’s must-see attractions: Montgomery Reef, a remarkable natural phenomenon. A tender ride will bring you closer to this incredible seascape, where you can observe the abundant marine life that calls this area home. The saltwater terraced waterfalls cascade off one of the world’s largest inshore reef systems.

End your day with a refreshing drink as you watch the sunset behind the reef while we depart and set our course for Talbot Bay.

Day 12: Talbot Bay

You’ll witness the geological sequence of time unfold as we prepare to visit the famous Horizontal Falls. Later in the day, we’ll explore other marvels of Talbot Bay, such as Cyclone Creek or Dugong Bay, both of which showcase geological wonders yet to be discovered on our journey.

Some of the rocks in this area are believed to be around 2.5 billion years old, making them half the age of the planet. As the day comes to a close, gather on the top deck for a sundowner, a moment to reminisce about your adventures and reflect on the breathtaking scenery you’ve experienced along the way.

Day 13: Talbot Bay, Cone Bay to Cape Leveque

As we cruise out of Talbot Bay, take in the sight of exposed seams of iron ore glistening in the rock faces as we pass Iron Islands, Koolan, and Cockatoo Islands. Continuing our journey west, we’ll arrive at the Buccaneer Archipelago, famously known as the Bay of 1000 Islands.

Our path will lead us through King Sound, where the tides are notoriously fierce, making for an exciting ride as the Eco Abrolhos dances with the water movement on our way to Cape Leveque. To cap off your adventure, enjoy one last breathtaking Kimberley sunset on your Eco Abrolhos cruise, creating new friendships and unforgettable memories along the way.

Day 14: Broome

We’ll rise early as we make our way to Broome, transiting past the stunning Cable Beach, Gantheaume Point, and into Roebuck Bay. Here, we’ll bid our final goodbyes, ensuring a smooth departure with a complimentary coach service to transfer you to your accommodation or the airport.

If you’re flying out of Broome today, we recommend booking an afternoon flight to allow for any unexpected delays. Safe travels!

Please note that this itinerary is subject to change and serves as a guide for the many destinations we aim to explore with you aboard the Eco Abrolhos while touring the Kimberley. Variations may occur as our itinerary depends on the tides of the Kimberley region.

The Eco Abrolhos Master will adapt the schedule to ensure safety and harmony with the natural environment, allowing all passengers to fully enjoy their ‘Trip of a Lifetime.’
