Kimberley cruises operate between April and September each season. If seeing the region’s spectacular waterfalls at their peak is a priority, the best time to travel is early in the season (April, May, or June) when water levels are highest. That said, the later months (July, August and September) are ideal for wildlife and birdwatching, offering excellent opportunities to spot a wide variety of species.
Kimberley cruises range in length from 4 to 13 nights. For those wanting to experience the full Kimberley coastline, we recommend choosing an itinerary that travels from Broome to Wyndham or Broome to Darwin, as these routes cover the entire region. Cruises from Broome to Darwin typically run for 10 nights, while Broome to Wyndham itineraries are usually 12 or 13 nights in duration.
Highlights of a Kimberley cruise include the dramatic Horizontal Falls, the majestic King George Falls and the unique tidal spectacle of Montgomery Reef. Seeing some or all these highlights are dependent on the cruise company and itinerary you take. Many excursions also feature guided hikes to ancient Aboriginal rock art sites, along with excellent opportunities for wildlife spotting throughout the journey.
Yes, different itineraries are tailored for duration & start/end points. Longer cruises, typically 10 or 11 nights, often travel between Broome and Darwin. Shorter cruises (4-8 nights) usually focus on specific areas, such as the northern or southern parts of the coast.
Some vessels such as Ponant’s Le Soleal & Le Jacques Cartiers, Coral Expedition’s Coral Adventurer & Coral Geographer and Pearl Expeditions, Paspaley Pearl offer balcony Staterooms. Smaller vessel, due to limited vessel size do not have balconies.
All Kimberley cruises we offer include all meals and shore excursions (excluding helicopter flights). Some cruise operators include beverages in the fare, while others have a bar where drinks can be purchased. In some cases, you’re also welcome to bring your own drinks on board (pre-ordered & delivered to the vessel prior to boarding)
Excursions often involve Zodiac boat rides to navigate gorges, guided hikes, and opportunities for fishing. There will also be activities which will involve some walking over uneven terrain to lookouts, indigenous rock art and significant landmarks.
Kimberley Quest II and Great Escape specialise in fishing-focused Kimberley cruises. Kimberley Pearl also offers guests the opportunity to fish on most days during their cruises. Cruises with 36 passengers or fewer will often include fishing as part of their activities program. However, larger vessels (72 passengers and above) typically do not offer fishing.
Walking sticks may be permitted on board. However, please note that shore excursions often involve uneven terrain, so it’s important to be steady on your feet. If you feel it would assist, we recommend bringing a walking pole for added support during these excursions. For safety reasons, walkers are not permitted on any Kimberley cruise
Smaller vessels generally offer more opportunities for shore excursions, allowing guests to explore the Kimberley coast in greater depth. These land excursions often involve uneven terrain, so it’s important to be steady on your feet. However, a high level of fitness is not usually required. As a general guide, if you walk regularly for exercise, you should be well-prepared for most excursions. Experienced guides will also brief guests on the physical requirements of each activity to help you decide if it’s suitable for you.
For Kimberley cruises, we recommend packing lightweight, quick-dry clothing. Long-sleeved shirts and pants are ideal for protection against the sun and insects. Sturdy, enclosed walking or hiking shoes with good grip are essential, along with amphibious sandals for wet landings. Be sure to bring swimwear, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings.
