Day 1: Kununurra, Wyndham Port
On embarkation day, a courtesy vehicle will pick you up from your accommodation in Kununurra for a scenic 90-minute coach journey to Wyndham Port, where the Ocean Dream awaits. Your adventure kicks off with welcome drinks as you sail out of Cambridge Gulf, soaking in a stunning Kimberley sunset. Unpack, meet your fellow travelers, and savor a delicious dinner on the rear deck while we cruise through the night towards the Berkeley River.
Day 2: Berkeley River
Embark on a tender vessel excursion to explore the stunning Berkeley River, characterized by its towering gorges, cascading waterfalls, and dramatic sandstone cliffs. Discover the headwaters of this remarkable river system and the diverse wildlife that inhabits it. Enjoy a refreshing swim in pristine freshwater holes, and take the chance to cast a line for some fishing.
Day 3: King George River, King George Falls
At high tide, we’ll navigate the sandbars of the King George River, making our way to the breathtaking falls. This stunning location is one of the Kimberley’s most impressive natural wonders. The twin waterfalls plunge dramatically over 80 meters, ranking among the tallest in Western Australia.
Day 4: Koolama Bay
We’ll explore Koolama Bay, a site of historical significance where the 1942 MV Koolama bombing attack by Japanese air raids occurred. In the afternoon, you can take a refreshing swim in a beautiful waterhole, where survivors of the bombing once camped.
Day 5: Glycosmis Falls & Barra Falls
Located near Cape Londonderry, today we’ll visit two remarkable waterfalls in the North Kimberley. Glycosmis Falls features two powerful streams cascading off the cliff face into the sea, making it a must-see. If time and tides allow, we may also explore the nearby Gwion Gwion rock art. Barra Falls, equally stunning and accessible only by helicopter or smaller vessels, offers a fantastic spot for a hike and a refreshing freshwater swim.
Day 6: Vansittart Bay, Jar Island
Join a tender vessel excursion to Jar Island, where you’ll explore the captivating Gwion Gwion rock art, also known as Bradshaw Art. This unique style, specific to the Kimberley region, dates back over 17,000 years and features distinct variations in style and meaning. In the afternoon, you’ll have the chance to hike to the crash site of a DC-3 aircraft that went down in 1942, located on the eastern side of Vansittart Bay.
Day 7: Mitchell River, Surveyor’s Pool
If you haven’t spotted a crocodile yet, you’re likely to encounter one on the mighty Mitchell River. This river is ideal for fishing and exploring the many creeks that wind through the mangrove forests as the tide recedes. The area teems with wildlife, making for exhilarating scenic excursions. In the afternoon, we’ll head to the stunning Surveyor’s Pool for a bushwalk followed by a refreshing swim.
Day 8: Swift Bay
If the tides permit, we’ll start the day with an early morning oyster harvest from the exposed rocks of Swift Bay. Guests can then choose between an exhilarating helicopter flight over the breathtaking Mitchell Falls or a scenic excursion by tender vessel. In the afternoon, we’ll delve into the cultural significance of Swift Bay, a site that once served as an important meeting place for the Indigenous people.
Day 9: Bonaparte Archipelago, Bigge Island
Discover the stunning beauty of Bigge Island, located about six kilometres off the coast in the Bonaparte Archipelago. This weathered sandstone island, surrounded by reef-filled bays, is home to several endangered and rare mammals. It also holds great significance as an Indigenous rock art site for the Wunambal Gaambera people, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Day 10: Prince Regent River, Kings Cascade Falls
As you enter the Prince Regent River in the morning, it’s time to don your bathers. Ocean Dream will navigate directly under the magnificent Kings Cascade Falls, offering a natural freshwater shower right on the bow. Afterward, you can embark on a moderate climb to the top of the falls for a refreshing swim in the stunning Cascade Pool. Alternatively, join a tender excursion upriver to explore the scenic “amphitheatre” falls, all while keeping an eye out for the fascinating wildlife that inhabits this beautiful area.
Day 11: Montgomery Reef, Red Cone Creek, Ruby Falls
The morning will be dedicated to exploring the captivating Montgomery Reef, which seems to rise dramatically during a falling tide. You’ll have the chance to witness a vibrant array of marine life, including fish, crabs, manta rays, sharks, and dugongs, all adapting to the shifting tides. In the afternoon, enjoy opportunities for fishing or mud crabbing, followed by a scenic tender excursion to explore the picturesque Sale River.
Day 12: Talbot Bay, Horizontal Falls
Today, we will encounter the breathtaking Horizontal Falls, a true natural wonder of the Kimberley. Guests can choose to take an exhilarating fast boat ride through the falls, followed by a tender vessel excursion up Cyclone Creek. Here, you’ll have the chance to explore stunning rock formations that were shaped billions of years ago, all while keeping an eye out for fascinating wildlife both in the water and on land.
Day 13: Crocodile Creek, Silica Beach
Embark on an expedition up Crocodile Creek, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim in a spring-fed waterhole surrounded by stunning scenery. Afterward, we’ll cruise through the picturesque Yampi Sound to Silica Beach, nestled on Hidden Island. Part of the Buccaneer Archipelago, this beach is renowned for its high silica content, making the sand beautifully white and soft. It’s the perfect spot to swim and stretch your legs, soaking in the natural beauty around you.
Day 14: Gantheaume Point, Broome
After one last delightful breakfast and heartfelt farewells to your fellow guests and crew, we’ll disembark from Ocean Dream at 8:30 AM. A courtesy coach will be on hand to transfer you back to your accommodation in Broome, marking the end of a memorable adventure.
Due to the significant tidal variations in the Kimberley, our planned itinerary may be adjusted by the captain during the cruise. Our Wilderness Cruises are adventure-based, so you can expect to discover and experience more than what’s outlined in the itinerary. Weather changes and other vessel movements will also be considered to ensure a truly exceptional wilderness experience for all guests.
Please note: This cruise also operates in reverse (vv) order.
The Uunguu Visitor Pass (UVP) is now required for all visitors along the Kimberley coastline. This fee is paid to the Uunguu native title holders, also known as the Wunambal Gaambera people for access along the coastline and onto their land. The fee collected by Ocean Dream Charters is passed directly on to the Uunguu native title holders and is separate to cruise costs.
