Day 1: Embarkation in Broome
Welcome to the adventure of a lifetime! Upon your arrival in Broome, a member of the Eco Abrolhos team will warmly welcome you at your hotel. From there, you’ll hop on a coach that will take you to Gantheume Bay, where tender boats will be ready to whisk you away to the Eco Abrolhos.
Once you board the Eco Abrolhos, you’ll meet the friendly crew and participate in a safety induction before we set sail from Broome. As we embark on an overnight journey, you’ll wake up to the breathtaking geological wonders that make the Kimberley region truly one-of-a-kind.
We recommend that you arrive in Broome the day before departure as the vessel’s departure time can vary on the day due to the tides.
Day 2: Yampi Sound to Talbot Bay
Welcome to the stunning Kimberley! As we embark on our tender boats, you’ll feel the dynamic currents of the tidal waters beneath you while we explore one of the many enchanting creek systems of the Buccaneer Archipelago, famously known as the Bay of 1000 Islands.
Witness the incredible geological history unfold before you as we make our way to the legendary Horizontal Falls in Talbot Bay. To conclude your day, soak in the breathtaking beauty of your first Kimberley sunset, surrounded by the stunning landscape, and take a moment to reflect on the day’s adventures.
Day 3: Collier Bay to Doubtful Bay
Today, you’ll witness the breathtaking spectacle of Montgomery Reef, where ocean water cascades off the tiers of an exposed coral reef. A tender ride will bring you closer to this stunning seascape, allowing you to observe the diverse marine life that thrives here.
Next, we’ll cruise into Doubtful Bay, where you’ll learn about the rich history and deep connections of the First Australians to Raft Point.
Enjoy lunch onboard the Eco Abrolhos as we make our way to our next destination: Red Cone Creek. Afterward, we’ll take a quick tender ride to explore the fascinating mangrove ecosystem, making our way to either Sapphire Creek or Ruby Falls for a refreshing splash!
Day 4: Camden Harbour to St George Basin
We’re now journeying north to the historic yet ill-fated Camden Harbour Settlement, a remarkable tale of resilience. Here, you’ll have the chance to explore the remnants of history and ruins, including a brief beach landing on Sheep Island.
In the late afternoon, we’ll cruise through the serene Rothsay Waters, making our way to Marigui Promontory via tender boats. Here, you’ll witness the remnants of rainforest in Palm Valley. As we glide along, you can also enjoy an art gallery, all from the comfort of your tender.
Day 5: St George Basin to Prince Regent River
Start your day with an early morning fishing session in the legendary “Land of the Giants” for those interested. Soon after, we’ll be back on board the Eco Abrolhos, cruising through the stunning St George Basin and into the majestic Prince Regent River National Park.
Tender rides will take you right beneath the breathtaking King’s Cascades, where you can embark on an adventurous trek and even enjoy a swim at the top of the falls. If you’re up for more exploration, you can venture further upstream to witness the spectacular Cathedral Falls.
As the day winds down, return to the Eco Abrolhos for a well-deserved sundowner on the top deck, complete with delicious snacks and entertainment.
Day 6: Prince Regent River to Port Nelson
It’s time to set out on the tenders to explore Camp Creek. This is another fantastic opportunity to spot some of the larger marine reptiles that call this area home, along with the vibrant birdlife along the mangrove-lined river system.
After our adventure, we’ll enjoy breakfast back on the Eco Abrolhos as we make our way to Port Nelson, located at the northernmost reaches of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Here, you’ll learn about the incredible voyages of Phillip Parker King as we tour Careening Bay and visit the famous “Mermaid Tree.”
Then, it’s back on board the Eco Abrolhos as we continue steaming toward our next destination: Naturalist Island.
Day 7: Naturalist Island, Hunter River to Prudhoe Island
Awaken to a stunning landscape that promises to leave you in awe. In the morning, optional helicopter tours will depart from Naturalist Island, offering breathtaking views of the magnificent Mitchell Falls and its surrounding scenery.
For those looking for a different adventure, consider a scenic tender excursion along the Hunter River, where you can encounter some of the unique wildlife of the Kimberley.
After our explorations, we’ll gather back on board the Eco Abrolhos for a delicious meal as we set sail further north through Scott Strait, heading to a secluded anchorage near Prudhoe Island.
Day 8: Prudhoe Island
Today offers a chance to try your hand at pelagic fishing, as we seek out larger predators like mackerel, tuna, and queenfish. After our fishing adventure, we’ll explore the surrounding islands, keeping an eye out for turtles, dugongs, and crocodiles along the rocky outcrops.
The local Wunambal Gaambera people would traditionally ask the great sea Wandjina Guyarra for blessings before foraging for food in these remote waters. You’ll be captivated by the islands’ stunning geological formations, which are both fascinating and breathtaking.
As our time here wraps up, we’ll pull up the anchor and set our course due east toward Swift Bay.
Day 9: Swift Bay to Port Warrender
We’ll set out early to visit a Wandjina Rock Art Site, an area of immense cultural significance to the Wunambal Gaambera people of North Kimberley.
Next, we’ll cruise to Port Warrender and the beautiful Osborne Islands. Upon arrival, we’ll embark on a tender tour of the area, where you’ll have the chance to explore a pearl farm (subject to availability), a historic shipwreck, and an ancient rock art site. There’s so much to discover and learn in this rich landscape, so take some time to relax as we continue our journey to Vansittart Bay.
Day 10: Vansittart Bay
As the morning dawns, we’ll set out on the tenders to explore a lesser-known World War II historical site. After a short and easy stroll, you’ll discover the remnants of this significant moment in history. Our Eco-guides will be on hand to highlight the local vegetation, including patches of native grassland and wildflowers along the way.
Following a delicious breakfast, we’ll journey to the intriguing Jar Island, where you’ll find an ancient art gallery that feels lost in time. This site offers a glimpse into the early occupation of Indigenous Australia, showcasing a unique form of rock art known locally as Gwion Gwion (or Bradshaw).
After returning to the Eco Abrolhos for lunch, we’ll continue our adventure to the southernmost point of Vansittart Bay.
Day 11: Vansittart Bay to Napier Broome Bay
The tenders are ready for another adventure, and we’ll land at Rocky Cove for a beach excursion. Here, you’ll hike along a winding rocky path, discovering scattered rock art sites that beautifully illustrate the deep connection to Indigenous Australia.
After our exploration, the Eco Abrolhos crew will weigh anchor and set sail toward Napier Broome Bay and the remarkable Drysdale River. The tenders will venture into the river’s far reaches, where you can experience the fascinating landscape where freshwater meets saltwater.
Once we finish exploring, we’ll continue our journey to Koolama Bay. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride!
Day 12: Koolama Bay to King George River
Welcome to Koolama Bay, named after the vessel SS Koolama. Here, you can reflect on the early accounts of the World War II bombing that occurred in this area.
Next, we’ll set out on our tenders to explore the magnificent King George River, home to the highest waterfalls in Western Australia. This is an experience you won’t want to miss; not only are the falls a breathtaking sight, but you’ll also have the chance to enjoy a refreshing shower from one of the cascading waterfalls right from our comfortable tenders.
As the day winds down, take a moment to relax with a quiet beverage and enjoy some pleasant conversation, soaking in the beauty of the Kimberley.
Day 13: Berkeley River to Cambridge Gulf
As we cross the mouth of the Berkeley River and make our way to our anchorage, it’s time for a scenic tender ride. Here, you’ll be able to take in the beauty of Malcom Douglas Falls while keeping an eye out for the elusive short-eared rock wallaby and the majestic birds of prey that inhabit the area.
On our return to the Eco Abrolhos, we’ll stop by the stunning Casuarina Falls, a natural amphitheater shaped by time.
Once back on board, we’ll set our course out of the Berkeley River toward the Cambridge Gulf and the Lynne River, ready for more exploration ahead!
Day 14: Cambridge Gulf
Rise and shine as we greet the incoming tidal movement into the Cambridge Gulf on our way to Wyndham. Upon arrival, we’ll dock alongside the Wyndham wharf for our final farewell before heading ashore.
Transport will be arranged to take you to your destination in Kununurra. A coach will be available for hotel or airport transfers, with an expected arrival around midday. If you’re booking a flight from Kununurra, we recommend scheduling it for late afternoon to accommodate any potential delays. Safe travels!
This itinerary is a guideline for the incredible places we aim to explore with you as our guest aboard the Eco Abrolhos while touring the Kimberley. Please note that it may be subject to change, as our destinations and visitation times are influenced by the tides of the Kimberley.
The Eco Abrolhos Master will adapt the itinerary as needed to ensure safety and harmony with the natural environment, allowing all passengers to truly enjoy a “Trip of a Lifetime.”
