Ocean Dream, Luxury Kimberley Cruise
8 Nights Northern Kimberley Dream Cruise
Kununurra/Wyndham to Mitchell Plateau/Broome (Cruise/Fly) itinerary
Day 1: Kununurra, Wyndham Port
On the day of embarkation, a courtesy vehicle will collect you from your accommodation in Kununurra and it’s just a 90 minute coach journey to Wyndham Port, where you will arrive at the awaiting Ocean Dream. Your cruise begins with welcome aboard drinks, as you cruise out of the Cambridge Gulf watching a glorious Kimberley sunset. Unpack, meet your fellow adventurers, and enjoy a delicious dinner served on the rear deck while we cruise through the night towards the Berkeley River.
Day 2: Berkeley River
Join a tender vessel excursion to explore the beautiful Berkeley River, with towering gorges, waterfalls, and sandstone cliffs. We discover the head of this incredible river system and the myriad of animal species that call this place home. Here we have an opportunity to swim in freshwater billabongs or try our luck with a spot of lure fishing.
Day 3: King George River
At high tide, we cross the sandbars of the King George River and make our way up to the picturesque twin falls. It is an enticing welcome to one of the Kimberley’s most magnificent natural wonders where the dual waterfall has a vertical drop of over 80m, making it one the tallest waterfalls in Western Australia. It is no wonder the King George River is a highlight for guests and a favourite destination for keen photographers.
Day 4: Glycosmis Falls, Barra Falls
Located near Cape Londonderry, today we experience two unique and impressive falls of the north Kimberley. Glycosmis Falls, complete with two thundering streams of water pouring off the cliff face into the sea is well worth a visit and if time permits and tides are right, we can explore the area for Gwion Gwion Art. Barra Falls, equally as impressive and only accessible by helicopter or smaller vessels, is a stunning location for a hike and freshwater swim.
Day 5: Vansittart Bay
Join a tender vessel excursion to Jar Island to view some fascinating Gwion Gwion Art, more often referred to as Bradshaw Art. Named after Joseph Bradshaw, who in 1891 became the first European to record these unusual paintings, the Gwion Gwion Art is unique to the Kimberley region and recorded to be over 17,000 years old. We also have an opportunity to walk to the site of a DC3 aircraft which crashed in 1942, located on the eastern side ofVansittart Bay.
Day 6: Mitchell River
Today we rise early to fish the best tides and set our crab pots amongst the mangroves. After a delicious lunch on board, we prepare for a hike to Aunauya (also known as Surveyors Pool) where we have an opportunity to cool off with a refreshing swim. Finish another majestic day in the Kimberley with sunset drinks on the bow as you enjoy your freshly caught mud crabs perfectly prepared by the chef.
Day 7: Montague Sound
Visit Montague Sound, where we are fortunate to view fascinating Gwion Gwion and Wandjina Art with a maritime theme. The perfect place for fishing, oystering and exploring remote beautiful beaches, Montague Sound is also a wildlife hotspot with a number of iconic Australian species including rock wallabies, northern quoll and the scaly-tailed possum inhabiting the area.
Day 8: Hunter River
Today we are cruising past an assortment of islands that form the Bonaparte Archipelago. Arriving at the Hunter River, one of the most picturesque places in the Kimberley, there will be fishing activities on offer as well as a scenic cruise up Porosus Creek. The Hunter’s stunning red cliffs receive the highest level of rainfall in the Kimberley, creating a dramatic and diverse landscape combination of rainforest and mangroves, home to the largest salt water crocodile population found in the region.
Day 9: Prince Frederick Harbour, Mitchell Plateau, Broome
Enjoy your final breakfast on board and say your goodbyes to the Ocean Dream crew as you and your fellow guests depart from the helideck and take a scenic helicopter fiight over the multi-tiered Mitchell Falls. From Mitchell Plateau, you will board a light aircraft for the 2 hour (commentated) scenic Aviair fiight back to Broome. Arriving at approximately 4:00pm, our courtesy coach will take you to your Broome accommodation. Ocean Dream Charters recommend staying overnight in Broome in case of any unforeseen delays.
Due to the large tidal variations in the Kimberley, we are not always able to guarantee to keep with the planned itinerary and adjustments may be considered by the captain during the cruise. Our Wilderness Cruises are adventure based and you can expect to see and experience more than what is listed on the itinerary. Weather changes and other vessel movements will be taken into consideration to ensure an exceptional wilderness experience for our guests.
Please note: This cruise also operates in reverse order, commencing in Broome and finishing in Wyndham Port (with a courtesy coach to your Kununurra accommodation or the airport).
The Uunguu Visitor Pass (UVP) is now required for all visitors along the Kimberley coastline. This fee is paid to the Uunguu native title holders, also known as the Wunambal Gaambera people for access along the coastline and onto their land. The fee collected by Ocean Dream Charters is passed directly on to the Uunguu native title holders and is separate to cruise costs.
